EU Council Makes Changes to Website After Macedonians Mobilize

Last Thursday, UMD, joined by Macedonians living in the European Union, and our friends in the European Parliament, wrote to the EU Council with a strong reaction over the use of “Language of the former” to describe the Macedonian language on their website for the Sofia Declaration.

The official language of the Republic of Macedonia- officially recognized at the United Nations and globally – is Macedonian.

Today, the EU Council responded “taking into account expressed sensitivities we have now changed the way we present the Sofia Declaration on our website – referring to the title of the declaration in the respective languages.”

Instead of changing the language to Macedonian they translated the text stating Декларација од Софија (or Declaration from Sofia in English).

The EU hypocrisy is more than clear.

UMD will continue championing human rights for Macedonia and the Macedonian people.
